Dame Laura Knight was a renowned 20th century artist who became the first woman to be elected to the Royal Academy. Laura and her husband started visiting Malvern in 1930 and by 1940 had moved to Colwall for the duration of the war and frequently visited Colwall in the years following the war. They stayed at both the British Camp and Colwall Park hotels. During her time in Colwall she painted local farmers at work as well as landscapes. She also became a War Artist and painted incredibly detailed studies of war workers - especially women.
